"Henry played a clarinet in a band in Cincinnati. Henry and Marie left Cincinnati in Oct 1857, coming by boat to Buffalo City, WI - down the Ohio to St. Louis on the Columbus, then up the Mississippi on the Grey Eagle. The boat was very crowded as the immigrants carried their household goods with them. There were horses on one side of the first deck and cows on the other.
On reaching Winona they were stuck on a sandbar for a day and a half. The people were taken off by the steamer Jenny Whipple and landed at their destination. The steamer that was stuck followed, delivering the goods of the passengers. They were landed in Buffalo City 0n Oct 31, 1857.
They slept in immigrant shanties the first night, with horse blankets for covering. There was a snowstorm that night, the snow blowing in the wide cracks of the shanty. On the next day they moved into a log and half frame house. They lived all winter on the second story. The first floor was a grocery store owned by a Mr. Guidinger. Their living quarters had no plaster and they cooked on a stove brought from Cinn. for heat. In March they moved to a story and a half house with 4 rooms, which was a well built house.
On April 1, 1858 brother Bill was born. They lived there about 1 < years. During this time he built a two story house into which they moved. In 1859 he went back to Cincinnati where he had fever ague so bad that he had to crawl onto the boat. This was common in the early days caused by a change in climate. Accompanying this were high fever and chills for which the cure was salt herring and cat's blood. As he went down the river the fever started to leave him and was gone by the time he reached Cincinnati. He worked in Cin. Until 1861. At the start of the Civil War he came back to Buffalo City but wasn't drafted. Bounty soldiers paid $75 for three terms."
