Young Dr. Louis Jacob Linder was preparing to sail to Europe on August 9, 1910, for advanced study in Vienna when would-be assassin J. J. Gallagher attempted to kill Mayor William Jay Gaynor of New York City.  Gallagher was reportedly a disgruntled former city employee.

Dr. Linder was nearby and rushed to assist Mayor Gaynor.  He was captured in this photo that Life Magazine later published as one of it's "most popular".  Although not identified when the photo was published, the story had been known in the family and Dr Linder was identified independently by several nephews and a niece.

Mayor Gaynor died in 1913 from lingering effects of his wounds.

The article at left above accompanied the same picture in the Kansas City Star on Feb. 2, 1975.  It was forwarded to me by Louis J. Linder Jr. ("Louie").  It had been sent to him by my mother, Adelaide Linder Busdiecker, on April 2, 1975.
