The information in these Linder pages is based on limited records and the recollections of the older members of the family and stories passed down by their parents.  Learning more depends on contributions from those who may have documents unknown to the rest of us.  Here is what we know, and how you can help.  Also see Questions for which we need answers.

Our knowledge of the history prior to the time of Jakob Linder in Herzogenbuchsee is very sketchy.  Family tradition has it that the family originated in Scandanavia, moved to France during the time of the Huguenots.  Because of religious persecution our ancestors then migrated to Switzerland.  Internet searches have found references to Linders currently living in the Scandanavian countries and in France, as well as Germany.  We do not now know of any connection between those families and ours.

At present I have been scouring the internet for scraps of information that might help us learn more.  I have just sent in my dues for the Linder Association which has a database that might help.  The Swiss Genealogy internet site provides a number of contacts and appears to be expanding.  Many of my leads have come from searches at www.google.com, including their new Groups button that allows you to search messages posted to Usenet discussion groups.
